Las plantas pasan todo su ciclo de vida en el lugar donde germinaron; no pudiendo migrar cuando las condiciones del entorno cambian o son desfavorables. Por  lo tanto, para sobrevivir  deben adaptarse continuamente ajustando sus programas de crecimiento y desarrollo. Uno de esos programas es el que determina cuándo florecer, donde es esencial un control muy riguroso de la expresión génica, en otras palabras, un control sobre qué genes están activos o reprimidos en todo momento. Los mecanismos llamados post-transcripcionales, que ajustan los niveles de ARN, juegan un rol fundamental en esta regulación. Nuestro laboratorio se centra en entender en detalle los mecanismos que permiten ajustar la expresión génica de forma rápida y precisa (como el splicing y el silenciamiento génico), y cómo estos diferentes mecanismos convergen e incluso interaccionan para regular procesos de desarrollo esenciales en las plantas, como la floración. Basamos nuestros estudios en aproximaciones moleculares, genéticas, fisiológicas y principalmente genómicas para descifrar la relevancia biológica de los mecanismos post-transcripcionales frente a cambios ambientales.
