El laboratorio tiene como objetivo investigar la integración de señales en redes sensoro-motoras. Por su naturaleza el procesamiento de información en el sistema nervioso tiene lugar en múltiples vías paralelas que encausan diferentes aspectos de la información exteroceptiva y propioceptiva. El análisis de este tipo de circuitos representa un gran desafío técnico e intelectual. Por ello, elegir un organismo de estudio que presenta una anatomía relativamente simple, permite investigar las redes neuronales subyacentes a los comportamientos con una doble ventaja: una aproximación abarcativa y a la vez detallada de los fenómenos celulares involucrados.

Línea de Investigación: Estudio de las redes neuronales que controlan el comportamiento motor en sanguijuelas de la especie Hirudinae.

Redes neuronales

Nosotros abordamos estas preguntas en la sanguijuela Hirudo sp que presenta una organización corporal sencilla y, en consonancia, un sistema nervioso relativamente simple en el cual las neuronas pueden ser identificadas y estudiadas con relativa facilidad. Esto permite un abordaje celular minucioso, utilizando técnicas que van desde registros electrofisiológicos intracelulares y extracelulares, técnicas ópticas (imaging de calcio) y modelado. En base a este tipo de estudios encaramos el análisis de la arquitectura de redes neuronales involucradas en conductas motoras tales como la natación o el desplazamiento sobre ventosas (crawling).
